A long chain of mountains and volcanic belt Stretches from the back bone of the islands of Sumatra, Java. Bali and others to the east. Of the 300 volcanoes. 128 are active, more than half of which have erupted. The most famous is Krakatau and island volcano located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. Its eruption in 1883 threw up ashes into the air which were believed to have circled the earth for two years.

The volcano craters are generally located in sparsely populated areas and do not pose a direct threat to the population. Instead the lava and volcanic ashes have been partly responsible for the fertility of the soil. In spite of the volcanoes, there are relatively few earthquakes and Indonesia lies outside the typhoon belt.

Because of its tropical climate and adequate rainfall, the vegetation is lush and green. Extenxive rain forests exist in Sumatra. Kalimantan and Irian Jaya while Nusa Tenggara is mostly shrubland and savannah because of the lower rainfall.

Indonesia has several high mountains, the highest peak being Mt. Jayawijaya in Irian Jaya formerly known as the Cartenz Top. It is clad in eternal snow and reaches a height of 5,030 metres or 16,000 feet

There is much more to trekking in the Indonesia than the main regions of Sulawesi and Irian Jaya . Experience the highest mountains, friendly people and charming hospitality on our trekking, rafting and wildlife expedition. Sulawesi - one of the best part regions to be explored and fascinating cultures to be experienced.

Trekking times vary depending on the tour operator and location chosen, all good tour operators specify the suitability of the trek for children, please do check before taking a trek on the time it is to take and the level of fitness required, some of the treks offered in Indonesia are for the experience trekker only. When trekking in Indonesia make sure you take sufficient water and supplies, as the humidity is exceptionally high. Happy trekking.
